Does every STCW certificate need renewal?
Not necessarily. “STCW renewal” usually means completing refresher training or demonstrating continued competence for particular safety courses. It does not mean repeating every STCW course you have taken.
Under STCW, specified survival and firefighting competencies generally require evidence of continued competence every five years. How you meet that requirement depends on the course, your sea service, and the rules applied by the issuing administration.
For Indian seafarers, start with the latest Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) requirements. Your employer and the vessel’s flag administration may also have acceptance requirements.
Renewing an STCW course certificate is separate from revalidating your Certificate of Competency (CoC), renewing your CDC, or obtaining a fresh medical fitness certificate.
Which STCW courses commonly need refresher training?
Review the course names on your certificates rather than relying on a folder labelled “STCW.”
| Course | What to check | |---|---| | Personal Survival Techniques (PST) | Five-year continued-competence requirements and the applicable approved refresher route | | Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) | Five-year continued-competence requirements and the applicable approved refresher route | | Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB) | Approved refresher requirements, eligibility and supporting sea service | | Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) | Approved refresher requirements, eligibility and supporting sea service | | Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats | Continued-competence requirements, if you hold or need this qualification |
Do not assume every other course has the same five-year renewal rule. Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, and security courses are not automatically subject to the same STCW refresher cycle.
Medical First Aid and Medical Care requirements should be checked separately against your duties, DG Shipping rules, and flag-state requirements. Employers may also require additional training.
For tanker, passenger-ship, IGF Code or other specialist qualifications, check the relevant certificate and endorsement rules separately. A basic safety refresher does not renew them.
Step 1: Check your certificates and joining requirements
Make a list of:
- Each course name and certificate number.
- The issuing institute and administration.
- The completion date and any printed expiry date.
- Your intended rank, duties, vessel type and flag.
- Your expected joining date.
If no expiry date is printed, do not assume the certificate remains sufficient indefinitely. A continued-competence requirement may still apply.
Ask your company’s crewing team which certificates must remain acceptable for joining and throughout the planned contract. If a certificate was issued outside India, confirm whether it is accepted as a prerequisite for the Indian refresher course you intend to take.
Step 2: Confirm the current DG Shipping route
Check the official DG Shipping website for current training guidance, circulars and approved institutes.
Then contact an approved institute with copies of your existing certificates. Ask:
- Which exact refresher course do I need?
- Am I eligible based on my previous training and sea service?
- Is e-learning required before attendance?
- Are there practical assessments or an exit examination?
- What medical fitness evidence is required?
- How will the certificate be issued and verified?
Sea service can support eligibility or evidence of competence, but do not assume sea time alone replaces all required refresher training. Practical skills may need to be demonstrated ashore.
Step 3: Choose an approved training institute
Confirm that the institute is approved for the specific course and training location, not merely listed as an approved maritime institute.
Before paying, obtain written confirmation of:
- Course dates and availability.
- Eligibility and document requirements.
- Required attendance and assessments.
- Current fees, including any additional examination charges.
- Cancellation and rescheduling conditions.
Fees and schedules vary. Confirm them directly with the institute rather than relying on old advertisements or social-media posts.
Avoid anyone offering a certificate without required training, attendance or assessment.
Step 4: Prepare your documents
Requirements vary, but institutes commonly ask for some or all of the following:
- INDoS number and matching personal details.
- Passport.
- CDC, including relevant sea-service entries.
- Original certificates for the courses being refreshed.
- Previous refresher certificates, if applicable.
- Valid medical fitness certificate acceptable for the course.
- Passport-size photographs or digital photographs.
- Sea-service testimonials or company letters, where required.
- CoC or other qualifications relevant to course eligibility.
- Evidence of completed prerequisite e-learning, where applicable.
Keep originals ready for verification and make clear digital copies.
Check that your name, date of birth and INDoS details match across records. Resolve discrepancies before booking; mismatched records can complicate admission or certificate verification.
Step 5: Complete training and check the new certificate
Complete all required learning, attendance, practical exercises and assessments. Survival and firefighting refreshers involve physical activities, so disclose relevant medical limitations before enrolment.
Once your certificate is issued, check:
- Your name and INDoS number.
- The course title and certificate number.
- Training and issue dates.
- The issuing institute’s details.
- Any stated validity or verification information.
Verify the certificate through the official mechanism applicable to that course. If a record is missing or incorrect, contact the institute promptly.
Save the certificate securely and send a copy to your employer. Keep your original qualification and earlier certificates too; a refresher certificate may need to be presented alongside them.
How early should you start?
As a practical planning buffer, review your certificates three to six months before expiry or your next joining date. This is not an official processing period.
Allow extra time if you need to correct records, obtain medical clearance, travel to an institute or fit training around leave. Course availability, assessments and certificate issuance arrangements vary.
If a certificate has already expired, ask the institute whether you remain eligible for the refresher route. Do not assume either that you must repeat the full course or that late refresher enrolment is automatically allowed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew STCW certificates entirely online?
Do not assume so. Some learning may be online, but safety refreshers commonly require practical attendance and assessment. Follow the approved course requirements.
Does renewing STCW certificates also renew my CoC?
No. CoC revalidation is a separate process, although valid safety training may form part of its requirements.
Will an Indian refresher certificate be accepted internationally?
Confirm acceptance with your employer and the vessel’s flag administration, especially if your original qualification was issued elsewhere.
